What-if scenario:
Andrea is befriended by a skater girl when she was younger and is humbled by her, even takes an interest in skating...but at first, it was only a means to an end (a.k.a getting her parents' attention).
Her skater friend has to move away, but Andrea maintains connections with her, including connection through their shared interest: skateboarding.
When she realizes that she doesn't want her interests to be tainted by her desire for her parents' attention, she finds the courage to make her parents listen to her.
Through attention and face-to-face talks (and most likely family counseling), Andrea's parents better their relationship with her, and she continues to pursue boarding as a passion, rather than a cry for attention. She keeps in touch with her inspiration to this very day. She even gives herself a handle: "The Wind-Seeker"!
