Richard Esme Trionfi, a London-born boy with Roma ancestry, wielder of what used to be called "gypsy magic" via playing card suits. Each suit is an achievement tied to his progress in life:

The heart symbolizes childhood, club for youthful recklessness, diamond for stable career and spade for the acme of old age.

He craves adventure, excitement and, of course, learning magic from his mother, whose bloodline he inherited magic from. His widowed mother accompanies him as his chaperone on his life journey to become the magician he dreams to be...but finds out there's nuances to the peaceful and quiet life his mother would prefer him to have.
